If you're an electric vehicle (EV) owner, you know the feeling: You pull up to a public charger, fumble for your phone, open an app, swipe a card, or maybe even call a number just to start charging. It's an extra layer of friction that can make the "road trip" part of the EV experience feel a little less smooth.

If you’re an electric vehicle (EV) owner, you know the feeling: You pull up to a public charger, fumble for your phone, open an app, swipe a card, or maybe even call a number just to start charging. It’s an extra layer of friction that can make the “road trip” part of the EV experience feel a little less smooth.

Well, get ready for a change. Kia America is rolling out a new technology called Plug & Charge, and it’s set to make that multi-step charging ritual a thing of the past.

What is Plug & Charge?

In short, it’s charging made simple.

Plug & Charge allows your eligible Kia EV to communicate directly with a compatible charging station, authenticate itself, and start the billing process automatically—all as soon as you plug the cable in.

As Sujith Somasekharan, Connected Car & Mobility Director at Kia America, puts it, “Our goal is to make electrified mobility effortless, secure, and connected—and this technology brings us one step closer to that reality.”

How It Works: A Truly Seamless Experience

No more fishing for cards or messing with apps. Once you activate the feature through the Kia Access app and link your payment method:

  1. Plug In: You simply connect the charging cable to your Kia.
  2. Authenticate: The vehicle and the charging station securely recognize each other in the background.
  3. Charge & Pay: The charging session begins, and payment is automatically processed using the payment method tied to your Kia Charge Pass account.

It’s completely hands-free and hassle-free.

Availability and the Connected Future

Plug & Charge is integrated right into Kia’s connected vehicle platform and is the latest addition to the Kia Connect suite of services.

When Can Drivers Get It?

  • 2025 EV6: Eligible owners can expect the feature to become available by the end of September 2025.
  • 2026 EV9: Eligible owners of the popular EV9 can look forward to the feature in Q4 2025.

Keep an eye out for direct communication from Kia regarding the exact rollout for your vehicle.

This launch is more than just a convenience feature; it signals Kia’s commitment to building a truly seamless EV ecosystem. By linking in-vehicle software, mobile services, and charging infrastructure, Kia is actively working to make EV ownership feel less like driving a traditional vehicle and more like a fluid, connected experience—like using your smartphone.

Plug & Charge is a powerful step forward in that evolution—one that reinforces Kia’s commitment to not only building electric vehicles but building a smarter, more human-centric mobility future.

What do you think of this new feature? Are you excited to try the seamless Plug & Charge experience?
