Hyundai Motor Company is taking a drive down memory lane, launching a powerful heritage campaign that honors four decades of the SONATA and its foundational predecessor, the STELLAR. This celebration isn’t just about cars; it’s a tribute to the lasting bonds and trust built between the company and the millions of customers who have driven these iconic sedans.
Since the STELLAR’s debut in 1983, followed by the SONATA in 1985, these mid-size models have symbolized more than just transportation. They represent Hyundai’s technological progress and dedication, achieving a massive joint cumulative global sales figure of 10 million units as of September 2025.
From STELLAR to SONATA: A History of Progress
The story begins with the STELLAR, which marked a major step toward technological independence for the Korean auto industry as Hyundai’s second proprietary passenger car (after the legendary PONY).
It quickly evolved into the SONATA, initially launched as a premium version of the STELLAR. Over eight generations, the SONATA became Hyundai’s longest-running volume model and a pillar of the brand’s global reputation.
As Sungwon Jee, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer of Hyundai Motor Company, explains, this campaign is about more than just nostalgia: “The restoration of the STELLAR 88 was not simply about re-creating the past but revisiting the dedication and efforts of former employees who worked toward independent technology development.”
Step Inside the Time Machine: The Pop-Up Exhibition
To share this rich history, Hyundai is hosting a special pop-up exhibition titled “STELLAR & SONATA” at piknic, a venue near Namsan Park in Seoul.
Exhibition Details:
- When: September 25, 2025, to January 4, 2026.
- What to See: The centerpiece is a fully restored 1988 STELLAR (‘STELLAR 88’), the special edition model used during the Olympic Games Seoul 1988. Visitors will also immerse themselves in Hyundai’s journey through:
- Archival materials and technical drawings.
- Original catalogues and behind-the-scenes R&D records.
This exhibition allows visitors to trace the evolution from the STELLAR’s humble beginnings to the SONATA’s current status as a global cornerstone model.
RETRACE Magazine: The Stories Behind the Wheels
In conjunction with the exhibition, Hyundai is releasing the second edition of its heritage publication series, RETRACE Magazine: STELLAR & SONATA.
This magazine goes beyond specifications and features to explore the deeper human connections these vehicles have fostered. It blends historical insights with 16 original pieces, including essays, interviews, and personal customer stories that highlight the value of long-standing relationships in everyday life.
If you’re keen to dive deeper, a book talk event will take place on October 18 at Hyundai Motorstudio Seoul.
Commemorate the Legacy
For fans looking to own a piece of this history, exclusive STELLAR and SONATA merchandise will be available for purchase at the piknic venue, select Hyundai Motorstudio locations (Goyang, Seoul, and Busan), and on the Hyundai Collection official website.
Hyundai’s celebration of the STELLAR and SONATA is a powerful reminder that “Progress for Humanity”—the company’s brand vision—is built on decades of dedication, trust, and the enduring relationships shared with its customers.
